Novalab Secures Major Grant for Quantum Materials Study

Jakob Foster · 2 September 2026

Novalab Research and Education has been awarded a substantial grant to advance investigations into quantum materials. The funding will support a multi-year project examining novel properties of two-dimensional materials and their potential applications in next-generation electronics.

Grant Details and Research Objectives

The award totals 4.8 million euros over five years from the European Research Council. Principal investigator Dr. Lena Kowalski will lead a team of 12 researchers focusing on topological insulators and their behavior under extreme conditions. Experiments will utilize Novalab's newly upgraded cryogenic facilities to measure electron interactions at millikelvin temperatures. The project aims to identify materials that maintain quantum coherence for longer durations, a critical step toward scalable quantum computing components.

Collaborations with institutions in Germany and Switzerland will provide access to advanced synchrotron facilities for structural analysis. Early milestones include synthesizing high-purity samples of bismuth-based compounds and characterizing their band structures using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Data from these studies will feed into computational models developed in partnership with the institute's theoretical physics division.

Impact on Research and Education

Beyond fundamental discoveries, the grant includes provisions for training 15 doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Workshops on quantum device fabrication will be open to external participants, strengthening Novalab's role as a regional hub for materials science education. Public outreach components will feature annual lectures explaining quantum phenomena to non-specialist audiences.

Project outcomes are expected to contribute peer-reviewed publications and potential patents in spintronics. Novalab leadership emphasized that the funding aligns with institutional priorities of combining rigorous experimentation with educational initiatives. Progress reports will be published quarterly on the institute's website to maintain transparency with stakeholders and the broader scientific community.
